In Antigua, Guatemala, I got in contact with an organization called Ecofiltro. I was very surprised by the solution this organization offers, and I was astonished that it is not already widely known and used around the world when I learned more about it.

The Problem Explained

The global shortage of clean, drinkable water is a pressing issue affecting billions of people. Over 2 billion individuals lack access to safe water, according to the WHO. The causes include:

  • Pollution: Industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and untreated sewage contaminate water sources.

  • Climate Change: Droughts, changing rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures reduce freshwater availability.

  • Overuse: Excessive water use for agriculture, industry, and domestic needs depletes resources.

  • Infrastructure: Many regions lack adequate systems to treat and distribute water safely.

This crisis leads to health problems, economic challenges, and conflicts over resources. Solutions include improving water management, investing in infrastructure, reducing pollution, and promoting conservation efforts.

Ecofiltro

Ecofiltro is a Guatemalan organization dedicated to providing clean, affordable drinking water to communities in need. Founded in 2009, it produces eco-friendly ceramic water filters made from natural materials like clay, sawdust, and colloidal silver. These filters effectively remove bacteria and contaminants, providing safe water without the need for electricity or chemicals.

Ecofiltro operates on a sustainable social business model, using profits from urban sales to subsidize filters for rural communities. Its mission is to reduce waterborne illnesses, eliminate reliance on firewood for boiling water, and improve access to safe drinking water across Guatemala and beyond.

I had the opportunity to visit the factory in Antigua. I was amazed by the professional and natural process; everything is made by hand using only four materials: clay, sawdust, colloidal silver, and water.

It was also very fun to meet Melina, who provided us with a tour of the factory. She even came to show us around while she was on holiday!

Please watch the video about this unique organization. I am confident that this organization will grow quickly, and in a few years, you will see an Ecofiltro everywhere. I hope that this system can support many people in need of clean and affordable drinking water.

Purpose Drivers to the max!
